High End and Industrial Computers |
Introduction
Typical examples of requested products out of 1WorldSync Content Solutions PDM coverage
This document lists various types of products that are sometimes ordered by customers but are currently incompatible with 1WorldSync Content Solutions
Product Data Model. It certainly does not list all types of incompatible products.
All products listed below are supposed to be rejected if ordered. Nevertheless, PDM might be expanded in the future to cover some of these products if,
based on customer demand and required investment, this becomes cost-effective.
High End and Industrial computers
Architectures of these computers are very different from general PC or Mac. Important parameters are not processor clock speed and disk space but rather
I/O channel qty, channel types.
Mainframes and Supercomputers
Supercomputers can be defined as the most advanced and powerful computers, or array of computers. Supercomputers are used to solve problems that are too complex or too massive for standard computers. Supercomputer design varies from model to model. Generally, there are vector computers and parallel computers. The price tag for a custom-built supercomputer can range from about $500,000 to millions of dollars.
Examples: NEC Earth Simulator; NEC Vector Supercomputers; IBM Blue Gene
Mainframes combine reliable single-thread performance, maximum I/O connectivity, maximum I/O bandwidth and the highest reliability. Mainframes cannot be described in terms of PC or Intel-based servers. I/O channel quantity and other architecture specific parameters are more important for mainframes than processor clock speed or hard disk space.
Examples: IBM eServer zSeries; IBM S/390; Fujitsu GlobalServer
High-end servers
High-end servers are massively scalable, highly available servers designed for mission-critical network computing in the heart of the data center. Configuration information of such systems cannot be adequately reflected in terms of PC or Intel-based servers.
Examples: Sun Fire 12K, 15K; HP Superdome; IBM eServer iSeries
Note: Most of mid-range and entry-level servers are covered; even those based on UltraSPARC, Alpha or Power4 platforms (Fujitsu PrimePower; AlphaServer DS, ES, GS; HP rp2400, rp8400, e3000 a-class, e3000 n-class; NEC TX7; Sun Fire V series, 3800, 4800, 6800; Sun Enterprise 250, 420, 3500, 4500, 5500, 6500; Sun Netra; IBM pSeries, 610, 620, 630, 640, 660, 670, 680, 690).
